Project Request:
To program, plan, and design the expansion of the D7 pediatric unit at Albany Medical Center’s Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital.
Project Solution:
A reorganization within the hospital opened up additional space for the D7 Pediatric Medical unit. The design included a common waiting area controlled by the unit reception desk before you accessed the pediatric unit. The focal point of the pediatric unit was color, bright and bold used everywhere. The goal was to provide an upbeat environment for children, and their families, receiving treatment or recovering from a procedure. Custom touches present throughout include cut-out children figures (the Children’s Hospital emblem) that begin with back-lit panels at the reception desk and continue to the custom impact-resistant doors. Other features include a magnetic display board for cards and children’s drawings, digital acrylic panels with child-friendly photos, and custom-designed wardrobe cabinets with space for a PlayStation. The 11 private patient rooms with toilets/showers are designed to accommodate a sofa sleeper for family overnight stays. Color is again a key element in the patient rooms including the floor pattern that helps to define staff and family zones, the wood-trimmed headwall, bold laminate cabinets, and soffits. On the technical side, seven of the patient rooms are positive pressure protective environment rooms for immunosuppressed patients, with all required systems.
