To design the transformation of a former residential healthcare services unit into a facility that provides outpatient wellness services.
The project began with a two-fold approach: extensive programming with the eight departments impacted and complete an existing conditions documentation and drawings. The relocated departments were phlebotomy, occupational therapy, pulmonary function testing, speech therapy, a sleep lab, and various support spaces. One of the desired outcomes of relocating phlebotomy was to allow the cramped ED to expand and provide a larger more isolated behavioral health area, a larger triage area, and a new fast-track room. A NYS HEAL grant provided limited funds. After programming, we developed several design options to verify the project could be completed within the budgeted amount. The selected design provided a new large waiting room near the main entrance to be shared by all the outpatient functions, including services not part of the renovation. With a large number of patient visits, phlebotomy was located adjacent to the waiting area and given an entrance directly from waiting. The other outpatient services extended down the wing with shared support spaces adjacent. The sleep lab was located at the end of the wing for privacy. The entire renovated area was designed with warm inviting colors and materials to provide a comfortable yet upscale appearance.
