To design PACU renovations at Stratton VA Medical Center under an IDIQ contract.
Because the operating suite needed to be fully functioning during the renovations, the project was completed in three phases. The first phase consisted of the relocation of an existing second-floor PACU into a vacant area. The existing PACU remained in operation while the new temporary PACU space underwent demolition and asbestos abatement. Fit-up of the space included replacement of windows, new headwall for six patient bays, required support spaces, and upgrades to the mechanical systems. An overhead patient lift system was incorporated into the design to help nursing staff transfer patients to and from their beds. The carrier for the traverse rail system is built to safely pass over the segmented primary rails, even while transferring patients. Once the first phase was completed, the vacated PACU was renovated into offices for the nurse manager and lead anesthesia physician in order to provide closer access to the ORs and PACU. The third and final phase of the project was to replace the flooring throughout each operating room.
