Project Details:
HHA was engaged in designing a 7,000-sf ophthalmology surgery center where state-of-the-art medical procedures were to be provided in a modern, patient-centered environment. The exterior design combines large glass areas in public spaces and earthier elements, such as wood-look siding and stone, in scale with buildings in the surrounding community. A large canopy provides protection from the elements and shields direct sun from the waiting room for patient comfort.
The center includes rooms for Class-B and Class-C operations, laser procedures, exams, a pre-op/PACU area, and waiting/reception and support. Patients enter a modern yet comfortable waiting room with abundant natural light. From the waiting room, they are escorted into the pre-op area in preparation for surgery. The pre-op bays are provided with natural light in a manner that protects patient privacy. After patients are prepped, they are brought to the surgical suite in a linear progression, from the entry door of the restricted corridor, into the OR area for surgery, and subsequently into the PACU at the opposite end of the restricted corridor. After recovery, patients exit through a separate door to avoid passing through the waiting room. Patients requiring only exam or laser procedures are brought directly into those areas from the waiting room, exiting through the main facility entrance. Staff parking and entry are located at the back of the facility, allowing staff to enter and exit without interfering with patient flow. The surgery center is a well-received addition to the community, providing ophthalmology services in a patient-friendly, non-hospital environment
